Ultrapool Beginner Guide

Everything a new player needs before the first run, written strictly from official mechanics and clearly-labelled early-player observations.

Ultrapool is easy to pick up: "just get the balls in the holes!" (official copy). But the wacky effects change the game fast — a ghost ball reappears, a chicken ball lays eggs, a bomb explodes if bumped. This guide walks the confirmed loop, then the settings worth knowing first.

The core loop

  1. Rack your triangle — a set of balls with different effects.
  2. Pocket balls — every ball sunk scores points.
  3. Pass the round target — score above the target earns money.
  4. Buy and improve balls at the bar — spend money on new balls and upgrades.
  5. Survive 10 rounds — the run is 10 rounds of scoring ever higher.

It plays like a pool version of Balatro / Super Auto Pets (developer description): the 'deck' is your ball triangle, and the 'cards' are ball effects that combo with each other. See balls and builds for the combo layer.

Settings to know before the first run

  • Precise Aiming Mode — toggle in settings if lining up shots is fiddly (added in the 0.8.1 update, still present in V0.15.0).
  • Mouse / touch controls — official store lists Mouse Only and Touch Only options; controller support is not officially listed (players asked — see FAQ).
  • F key — toggles full-screen; the official fix for the game launching off-screen on Steam Deck / small displays (V0.14.14 patch note).
  • 'I played the demo' button — in settings, grabs most of your demo progress (first 3 decks, all difficulties except All Nighters) after a save issue (V0.14.14 patch note).

Scoring and economy

Officially: pocketing balls gives score, and score above the round target gives money to spend at the bar. The exact target values and shop prices are not published — discover them in-game, and ignore anyone quoting exact round targets without a version reference.

First-run tips (community-observed)

  • Pick balls that keep making points without perfect shots — spawners and self-feeding effects smooth the early rounds.
  • Do not chase an all nighter on your first runs (early-player advice): several players recommend clearing a few other sets/difficulties first.
  • Have fun exploring effects — Steam reviews report ~2 hours to unlock the higher difficulties and sets on a first playthrough.
  • Your daily challenge score is tracked on a shared leaderboard — free extra reason to replay after the run ends.

Exact goals, prices and unlock conditions are only published here when they are official or verified — nothing is guessed.

FAQ

FAQ

Common questions about this topic.

Is Ultrapool hard to learn?

The pushing-a-ball-into-a-hole part is easy (official copy: 'just get the balls in the holes!'). The roguelite layer — effects, builds, fusions — is where the depth is, and it ramps gradually.

How long does a run take?

A run is 10 rounds. Early reviews describe a first full playthrough of the unlock ladder in roughly 2 hours; individual runs are much shorter.

Is there a tutorial?

No separate tutorial mode is officially listed. The store page's own explanation (score → money → buy/improve balls → survive 10 rounds) is the confirmed loop this guide follows.

Does Ultrapool need a gamepad?

No — the official store lists Mouse Only and Touch Only options. Community members have asked about controller support, but none is officially documented as of V0.14.14.

Do I need to know real pool rules?

No. It is an arcade roguelike that uses pool physics; the official copy stresses 'easy to pick up pool mechanics: just get the balls in the holes!'
